"The Proud Tower" (title of a book by Barbara Tuchman) was the figurative culmination of Europe's imperial glory. Extensive trade and cultural interaction among the major powers of Europe led many people to conclude that a major war on the continent was simply unthinkable. They were wrong, neglecting to take into account clashing nationalistic aspirations and the alliance obligations that doomed Europe to an unprecedented holocaust.
