Cinco de Mayo

Today is Cinco de Mayo, Mexico's national holiday, commemorating the victory over French occupation forces in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Anti-imperialist sentiment still resonates deeply in Mexico, whose capital city was occupied by foreign troops twice in the mid-19th century. Yet according to the Washington Post, this holiday is becoming a bigger deal in the U.S. than it is in Mexico, much like Saint Patrick's Day. Last year, President Bush hosted a Cinco de Mayo party at the White House, but given the chilly current state of relations, no such event is being held this year.
